Comments on 2013: Global temperatures remained within the range of the last decade and average US temperatures are down from last years record high (not shown). But the ocean continued its steady absorption of heat energy. The ocean heat content is a fundamental indicator of global warming since it absorbs ~90% of the heat energy trapped by greeenhouse gases. The remaining 10% of heat energy is absorbed by glaciers and sea ice (6%) and the atmosphere (4%). The recent pause in rising global atmospheric temperatures is in part caused by the ocean absorbing more of the trapped heat. Jan 28, 2014
